The Haiga Pages

The Haiku and Poems of
Kato Gyodai (or Gyotai) (1732-93)

In the cold sky of dawn
Only a single pine-tree
On the peak.

that white peony
lover of the moon trembling
now at twilight

In the dawn
whales roaring;
a frosty sea.

Letting the child
on my back hold some bracken
I just picked

The falling leaves
fall and pile up; the rain
beats on the rain.

Leaf falling on leaf,
on mounds of leaves, rain splashing
in pools of rain ...

By the spring breezes
The beautiful girl is pushed
What indignity!
