Masajo

Masa Suzuki (1906-2003)

A selection of haiku

spring loneliness---
it falls short of the surf
this stone I toss

I have stolen a man
but never a thing of value
I roll up the bamboo blind

no escaping it ---
I must step on fallen leaves
to take this path

talking to myself
consoling myself once more...
snow in spring

quenching my thirst---
a sinner’s face reflected
in the spring

not a word for me
he just continues to watch
the winter waves

steamed in sake-
small clams open their shells
the night's coldness

winter mist-
memories of embracing
and being embraced

love fulfilled...
fireflies leisurely await
the sunrise

winter surf
now it dashes against
me alone

shall I betray him
or let him betray me?
the shrikes shrill cry
